Disclaimer: I do not know, and have never met or even seen Joseph Candare. So anyone who accuses me of being biased will get hit by a slipper.
I've been trying hard not to write about this due to the sensitivity of the topic, but it seems things have gone out of hand. (read: this whole mess is on TV now.) And if I can do anything to calm things down, maybe even persuade a few people, that will be enough for me.
So yes, my thoughts.
The guy killed a cat who was well-loved by many, with apparently no better reason than he felt like it. Anger will be the inevitable response of the reader to the situation as reported by Candare himself. It was an unprovoked attack and there was no justification given. The feeling of anger is justified. Action dictated by anger is not.
The inflammatory comments in that blogpost were not justified. Making posters that defame Candare is not justified. Bringing it to national television and exposing him to the entire country and ruining his reputation and possibly even his future is not justified.
TV? Seriously? That's going to ruin his life.
This is mob rule. Overreaction. This is way overblown and it isn't right. Did people even consider if he had mental or psychological problems? Didn't it strike them how odd it was that he had such a strong reaction to cats? How about his family? What if his siblings get teased in school? What if his parents get flak at the workplace?
All this is so childish it disgusts me. So many people are focusing their energies on hurting Candare when they should be focusing on giving support for the bereaved. And this is coming from the National University—supposedly the best of the best that the country had to offer. Apparently not. | pusablanca wrote on Apr 20, '09, edited on Apr 20, '09 Despite my strong feelings of loathing towards people who are unnecessarily cruel (provoked or not)... I maintain perspective, it was a cat and not a person that was murdered. That guy needs therapy. My fear (and I don't think this is unreasonable) is that cruelty towards animals can be a sign of, or can lead to, violent/cruel behavior towards humans in the future.
If I were his parent/guardian/therapist I'd try to find a way to make him see how pets can be endearing to people. If he had a pet that he really loved and bonded with, it would change his cruel behavior. |
 | hey, i'm glad your schedule of HW finally opened up ;) good on ya levi |
 | Meh, we all still have a little savage in all of us, buried beneath this civilization we've come to acquire |
 | Okay, just found out about this after reading your blog post. O.o And then did some background reading.
Apparently the TV appearance was anonymous though, according to some... very angry blog.
I'll have to agree that I find what he did just...wrong. Meanwhile, the people who don't see anything wrong with what he did is a little more disturbing. You don't yell at a disturbed kid to fix it, you send them to therapy and so on. At least, I'm pretty sure you don't yell at them. I... don't know many people who've tried to yell at autistic kids.
At any rate, they'll still have to fix the root of the entire bloody thing instead of just telling him to "stop harming helpless cats." If there's really something wrong in his head, repressing it is likely just going to make it worse, and that's much, MUCH scarier. Another person seems to have commented that this isn't the only "naughty" thing that this JC character has done.
That said, he may be apologizing for only a half-correct reason right now. Hope the proper course of action is taken. Some people out there need a bit of compassion. God knows compassion in the right place probably would have saved the cat. ----
(Side note: I didn't know that we had to secure certificates from some place in order to do experiments on animals. Whee-oops. :| Or maybe the lab rats we procured from BFAD are pre-approved or something. o.o) |
 | *nods* Even if the TV appearance was anonymous, other things other people do are kinda... over the top. Like shooting a rat with a 50 cal.
And it's most of what's happening now is negativity and nothing constructive. |
 | consistent pa rin ang UP sa pagiging microcosm ng pilipinas. OA for all the wrong reasons. |
 | uh... i feed rats to my snake... :( my snake has to eat and i dunno how else to feed it rat |
 | *is donna* :p Hm.. "brevity" ulit :p HAHA just because I like numbering things :p
1. The guy needs to be punished for his action. I agree that the derogatory comments were uncalled for but he still needs to be punished. He has repeatedly been cruel to animals and it's because people tolerate his behavior that it has led to this.
2. The fact that this ended up on TV shows that this WAS blown out of proportion but that's media talking. What gets better ratings than a kitten getting killed? o.o We've had this discussion before.
3. Also, the episode of CSI the week after this was about a serial killer who admitted to killing cats in his youth. XD La lang. |
 | Hello, cats are more important than people. God Levi.
Also, all UP has is a reputation for academic intelligence, not smartness; there's a significant and depressing difference. |
 | not some, all of us do that, what's impt is we realize it before we do any real damage |
 | you have an evil imperial dark lord mode? |
 | I find your lack of faith disturbing...
I am in fact known as Imperial Dark Lord Feanne. You may address me in this manner. |
 | would Imperial Dark Lord Feanne be so kind as to show me her death ray like device (a deathstar would be adequate) to prove her point? |
 | Again, I find your lack of faith disturbing!
*evil death glare*
Well there you go. |
 | Hello levi!
I love cats
I cannot comment on this issue without bias |
 | superbong wrote on Apr 20, '09, edited on Apr 20, '09 there's a cat in the USC office x.x ...si BUDGET CAT! |
 | i'm not a fan of cats but i support animal rights. i agree that the situation is blown out of proportion. there are more important issues that we should be tackling.>_< also, i agree with you in investigating his background first. they should be more concern in that than writing angry blogs at him when they don't even know what's going on his mind. psycho or not, he's still human. i don't know which matters most anymore. hahaha. |
 | aksvc wrote on Apr 21, '09 I find it disturbing that bloggers have a lot of power through mob rule. This isn't the only instance. There's the one with the Atenean kid who went to some province, the golfers who had a fight with someone. It's the same thing no matter which side you are on. |
 | FYI. DDA of NIP tried to minimize the damage on the kid. Failed. Internet Mob. Tsk tsk tsk |
 | what's a DDA? Director of Dumbledore's Army!!! |
 | Deputy Director for Academic Affairs |
 | oooh... if even he failed then... poor guy |
 | O.o I saw one of the hate blogs that you commented in rin. :)) Dude. that dude's a teacher. :| Disturbing. |
 | Okay, edit. :| I saw A LOT of blogs about this. DEEYUM. And one of the comment-ers made a good point.
He's a kid. :| And how will he handle the pressure? O.o wouldn't it be like.. THIS will push him towards the edge? x.x Shiz. |
 | levi88 wrote on Apr 22, '09, edited on Apr 22, '09 O.o I saw one of the hate blogs that you commented in rin. :)) Dude. that dude's a teacher. :| Disturbing. Yep, everyone's joining the hate bandwagon. =/
I checked it out again. He replied to the comments, and he is... adamant. Sarcastic even. |
 | Di siya teacher. Incoming 3rd year student yon. |
 | i think she was speaking of the person who owned the hate blog, as being a teacher |
 | Yes I was. O.o The idiot who put up the picture and everything. x.x |
